Disclaimer: This is civic / culture journalism for planning — not an official temple or GCC calendar. Immersion routes, cracker timings, and road closures change yearly.
How to use this calendar
- Use it to anticipate crowds and traffic, not as a ticket listing.
- Pair with our events hub for concerts, markets, and meetups on the same weekend.
- Temple festivals follow the Tamil lunar calendar — weekdays shift each year.
Season-by-season
| Festival / season | Typically when | Where | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pongal / Thai | Mid-January (Thai month) | Homes citywide; neighbourhood kolams; some temple and cultural programmes | Tamil harvest festival — travel peaks, markets busy, many offices closed for long weekend |
| Republic Day weekend culture | 26 January weekend | Marina, Island Grounds, school/college programmes | Traffic near beach roads; check event permits |
| Mylapore / Kapaleeshwarar festivals | Multiple — notably Panguni (Mar–Apr) and other temple calendars | Mylapore, Kapaleeshwarar Temple precinct | Ther (chariot), music, street food — classic Chennai heritage weekend |
| Chithirai / Madurai-linked observances in Chennai temples | April–May (lunar calendar) | Select Murugan and Amman temples across the city | Local temple crowds; confirm with each temple |
| Summer cultural / music series | May–June | Sabhas, galleries, OMR community halls | Indoor AC venues dominate; check our events hub |
| Independence Day programmes | 15 August | Fort St. George area, schools, wards | Road restrictions near ceremonial venues |
| Vinayaka Chaturthi | August–September (lunar) | Neighbourhood pandals; immersion points by GCC guidance | Traffic near immersion routes; follow GCC notices |
| Navaratri / Kolu season | September–October | Homes, Mylapore, South Chennai streets | Evening visits; street parking scarce in old neighbourhoods |
| Deepavali | October–November | Citywide | Crackers, late shopping, transport surge — follow TN pollution / timing rules |
| Karthigai Deepam | November–December | Homes and temples; Thiruvannamalai pilgrimage spillover | Lamp lighting; temple evening crowds |
| Margazhi music season | Mid-December to mid-January | Mylapore–T. Nagar sabha belt; Music Academy corridor | Peak classical music tourism — book kutcheris early |
| Christmas & New Year weekend | 24 Dec – 1 Jan | Egmore, Harrington Road, malls, beach roads | Nightlife and dining rush; hotel rates spike |
Margazhi tip
December–January is peak sabha season. If you are visiting for kutcheris, stay near Mylapore / T. Nagar and book early — last-minute tickets and parking are the hard part, not finding a concert.
